About this project
Bronsgroen and 32 other Belgian energy cooperatives are together, via Seacoop, owners of 5 wind turbines in the offshore wind farm Northwind on the Lodewijkbank, 37 km off the Belgian coast. The complete park has 72 turbines with a total capacity of 216 MW and prevents 309,000 tons of CO₂ annually.
The 5 turbines in which Bronsgroen participates produce 50 to 65 GWh of green electricity annually — enough for more than 15,000 households — and thereby avoid approximately 20,000 tons of CO₂ per year. Wind turbines convert twice as much energy into electricity as solar panels or combustion engines.
Northwind has been operational since 2014 and produces green electricity more than 90% of the time. Via submarine cables, the electricity is transported to the Belgian grid in Zeebrugge. This initiative democratizes the ownership of renewable energy: citizens become co-owners of wind infrastructure in the North Sea.
The total investment amounts to €10,000,000, shared among 34 cooperatives. Bronsgroen participation since early 2025.
