About this project
210 cooperative solar panels on the Municipal Works of Lommel, installed together with the City of Lommel and installer EGS Group. With a capacity of 90 kWp, this installation produces approximately 80,325 kWh annually — equivalent to the consumption of around 23 Flemish households — and saves approximately 17 tons of CO₂ per year. Operational since mid-October 2024.
The Municipal Works of Lommel are responsible for various tasks including infrastructure maintenance, park and green space management, waste collection, street cleaning, maintenance of public buildings, and winter services. The solar installation reflects the municipality's commitment to environmental sustainability and citizen participation.
The project is entirely financed with citizen capital. Residents of Lommel can become co-owners. The generated electricity is consumed locally at favorable rates, with the surplus distributed via energy shares to other municipal buildings.
Lommel positions itself as an energy pioneer with the largest solar park in the Benelux and the largest wind farm in Flanders, generating 53 MW for 34,000 households. In total, four municipal buildings in Lommel will be equipped with approximately 475 cooperative solar panels, totaling 198 kWp and 180,000 kWh annual production.
